Universiade
More than 1,500 sportsmen and women from 53 nations, 600 officials,
about 3,500 accredited personnel and approx. 70.000 thousand spectators.
These are only some of the major figures of the
22nd Winter Universiade,
which took place from the 12th to the 22nd of January, 2005 in the area of Innsbruck/Tyrol/Austria.
Apart from the sporting aspects, the security of the participants and visitors is also
an important topic at such a large event. However this security can only be made quite
sure if communication among all involved users is guaranteed.
|
Already in the event preparation phase the Federal Ministry of Interior (MOI)
therefore decided together with the province of the Tyrol, to realize the new digital
trunked radio system "Digital radio BOS-Austria" at all places of event of the
Universiade, as a pilot test phase in the development of the whole project.
The entire communication between the organizing committee, the gendarmerie, the
police, the rescue units and the fire-brigade was already performed via the new system.
Together with the MOI the Tyrol is the first Austrian province to realize this system.

The users seemed quite impressed by the efficiency and the very
good voice quality of the system and the general opinion was very positive.
Even in peak times, with an average of 800 calls per hour,
the capacity of the new radio system was not really streched and a lot more traffic could
have easily been accommodated.
A few more facts concerning the technical infrastructure during the Universiade:
The city of Innsbruck, the Innsbruck surrounding
countryside and the nearby area of
Hochfilzen were supplied:
15 base stations,
4 dispatcher units,
,
500 radio terminals,
150 different talk groups,
approx. 5.000 calls per day,
approx. 65.000 calls altogether.
